Leadership Skills for First Time Managers

“The number one problem first-time leaders face is failing to understand that leading requires entirely different strengths than does doing or managing.”

“Taking over as a leader for the first time is a critical, career-defining moment. Getting this transition right accelerates your career trajectory. Avoiding avoidable mistakes at this juncture requires preparation, commitment, and follow-through.”

A study by Corporate Executive Board now Gartner found that about 50-70% first time managers fail in their managerial role. Another study found out that 85% first time managers do not get any training prior to switching into role of a manger. Usually the one who performs best functionally is picked up to become the first time manager, one of the most challenging and critical career transitions. They move from peer to leader, and research shows that less than 10 percent of managers and supervisors were prepared for a leadership role before or after being promoted (International Success Academy Study 2013). Till date the first time managers were into peer relationships but now they have to get into leadership relationship – a transition which is difficult all the more considering that they practically have no leadership experience to fall back upon.

Hence, it is essential that the first time managers are given extensive training so that they do not falter at the first step of managing the teams. This programme would give the first time managers all the knowledge, tools, and techniques to be an effective manager.
